Thomas Gainsborough Room

This Deluxe bedroom’s namesake – the portrait and landscape painter Thomas Gainsborough – would no doubt have felt at home here, thanks to the restful woodland views. 

It is decorated with mahogany furniture and patterned beige coloured upholstery and the two tall windows add an airy brightness. The super king sized feature bed is backed with upholstery, and there are two armchairs, a coffee table and working desk.

As for the man himself, Gainsborough was an 18th century artist who moved in 1759 to Bath, where he became revered in fashionable circles. He is recognised as having been a founding member of the Royal Academy of Art and as being one of the strong influencers of the British landscape school. 

He lived in the Circus, which today is a characterful neighbourhood with interesting boutiques and a strong café culture. A plaque with his name can be viewed at 17 The Circus, and you can visit the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath to view some of his works.
